SCART is on a mission to preserve, protect and promote (into perpetuity) the stories, artifacts and history of South Carolina’s role in the American Revolution. South Carolina changed the world. The Trust’s collections highlight the pivotal times, places and people that helped us win our independence and catalyze over 250 years of change.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple. Find information, artifacts, places and stories that shaped our understanding of the American Revolution in South Carolina and preserve them. We follow a simple framework in fulfilling our mission:

“Maintain (something) in its original or existing state.”
We’re passionate about keeping history alive through the research and efforts of historians and collectors across the state of South Carolina.

Protect

“To keep safe from harm, injury or loss.”
So much history has been lost through the passing of time. Our vision is to protect the vast trove of stories, artifacts, records and places that changed the course of America forever.

Promote

“To further the progress of something”
We believe that the stories and sacrifices of South Carolina in the American Revolution deserve to be shared with everyone.

Through investments, collections acquisition and preservation efforts our goal is to allow these works to live on for future generations to enjoy…forever.

A Battle That Changed History

The Battle of Cowpens, fought in South Carolina on January 17, 1781, is considered a decisive battle in the American Revolution, as it marked a major American victory against British regulars and is seen as a turning point in the Southern Campaign, significantly contributing to the eventual British surrender at Yorktow

Before There Were The Carolinas

Most Americans are not aware that the original colony encompassing North and South Carolina was chartered in 1629 by English King Charles I and he named it Carolana. Discover more about the history of these two states.

The Worst Patriot Defeat of The War

On August 16, 1780, more than 2000 British and Loyalist troops under Lt. General Lord Cornwallis met and defeated over 4,000 American troops commanded by the “Hero of Saratoga,” General Horatio Gates. The Battle of Camden was the worst Patriot defeat of the American Revolution.
